Coal Aly is an 11-piece cover band based in State College, PA. We are a diverse group of musicians comprised of many ages and backgrounds - brought together by a love of music and performing.
A broad chart book with three vocalists and a five-piece horn section allows us to play virtually anything. Favorite hits from the likes of Chicago, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, ABBA, Amy Winehouse, and more make it very hard to stay off the dance floor!
Why a five-piece section? For one thing, we can't fit any more horn players in the studio. More importantly, it gives us that old-school live horn band sound that's so rare these days. It means we're more than just another cover band, we have something special to bring to the table.
Cat is a Bellefonte native and Penn State graduate. Her musical background is in theater, and she brings a ton of energy and talent to the stage. She works at Juniper Village (the reigning Wing Fest champs). When she isn't bringing the house down with the band or cooking delicious chicken, she is often found forgetting to write a bio for the website.
Rose is a State College local with a Penn State degree in musical theater. Initially brought on as a sub, she quickly proved to be an invaluable and critical part of what makes our vocal harmonies so special and powerful.
Dan's day job doesn't allow for much spare time, but he's happy to spend as much of that as he can playing keys with Coal Aly (and hanging out with his rabbit, Queen Thumper). Dan attended Berklee College of Music, has played in a variety of bands over the years, and considers himself the eye candy of the band.
Wesley has played guitar and bass for nearly 30 years in numerous bands, both here and in Upstate NY. Although music is a hobby, Wes constantly strives to be a better musician and being a member of this band has certainly allowed him to realize that goal. He counts Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, Steve Howe, Eric Johnson, Steven Wilson, John Petrucci, and Claudio Sanchez among his biggest influences.
Max is a State College local and Penn State graduate with experience playing a variety of styles and genres. He draws influence from Wayne Bergeron, Eddie Severn, and Chet Baker. His experiences include drum and bugle corps, amusement park work, and cruise ship work. When not playing music, you can find him sleeping in or playing disc golf.
Karl is a local musician and band instrument technician. He has been playing the saxophone, primarily the bari, for 15+ years. During the week he can be found at Bandman Rental & Repair in Altoona, working tirelessly to keep local musicians' instruments in top shape. In his free time you can find him playing with Coal Aly or participating in a number of medieval combat sports.
